There is something deeply satisfying about building a thing that holds other things. This spice cabinet started as a sketch and became, over many hours in the shop, a small piece of furniture with its own personality. Walnut was the obvious choice — warm, serious, with that grain that catches the light differently depending on where you stand. The slatted door was the moment I committed to a Japanese-influenced sensibility: restrained, functional, quietly beautiful. The little ceramic drawer pulls with their blue motifs were a deliberate counterpoint — a nod to Delft, a wink at the world. I inlaid maple stringing along the drawer fronts to break the dark mass and give it some breath. It sits on stubby little legs that make it feel grounded, almost proud of itself. I am proud of it too.
